Someone embarking on a weight loss journey is likely to first look at their diet, then cardio, then maybe consider using the circuit training machines at the gym. Those new to working out are likely to avoid weight training, specifically heavy lifting. They are afraid to bulk up, add too much muscle or get injuries by lifting heavy weights. The truth is, however, that when weight lifting is done properly, heavy lifting is very effective for weight loss. Heavy lifting increases metabolism, increases balance and stability and builds confidence. Essentially, lifting weights allows you to change your body composition by adding muscle and burning fat. Your body shape will also change because muscle takes up less space than fat.
